La Vie Boheme! Jonathan Larson's iconic Pulitzer Prize-winning musical that shaped a generation of audiences and taught us all to measure our life in love.
Set in the East Village of New York City, Rentis about falling in love, finding your voice and living for today. Winner of the Tony Award for Best Musical and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Rent has become a pop cultural phenomenon. with songs that rock and a story that resonates with audiences of all ages.
Based loosely on Puccini's La Boheme, Jonathan Larson's Rent follows a year in the life of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York's Lower East Side, under the shadow of HIV/AIDS. The physical and emotional complications of the disease pervade the lives of Roger, Mimi, Tom and Angel. Maureen deals with her chronic infidelity through performance art; her partner, Joanne, wonders if their relationship is worth the trouble. Benny has sold out his Bohemian ideals in exchange for a hefty income and is on the outs with his former friends. Mark, an aspiring filmmaker, feels like an outsider to life in general. How these young bohemians negotiate their dreams, loves and conflicts provides the narrative thread to this groundbreaking musical.
This is theatre at its best – exuberant, passionate and joyous. Regional theatres will love the freedom and flexibility that Rent offers; minimal costuming and sets are required.
My Brother and I (both born female) want to preform “What You Own”, are we allowed?
Him and I are wanting to preform this for our Thespy at the District level. I have checked that we are able to preform musical scenes from Rent but it is still unclear if we are allowed to preform the song as born females.
Does this also apply to other musicals as well?
Thank you for your time!!
Hello,
I am planning to produce a play in Korea. We would like to include the musical number "La Vie Bohème" from the musical Rent in our production. We intend to translate the lyrics into Korean ourselves and perform it live. While we can request copyright permission for the sound recording through the Korea Music Copyright Association, we need the author’s consent for translating the lyrics and performing them ourselves.
Could you please advise us on how to obtain the necessary permissions for this?
Thank you.
I know a non profit that is interested in doing a adaptation of the musical rent for charity 1 show both live and streamed what would the procedure be to get the license to do this
Hello, I am a Korean university student.
The university club wants to perform musical rental without commercial purpose and the number of performances is 4.
What should I do to get a license in this case?
Can i get a license for free?
Where should I ask about the license acquisition cost?
For Rent: Do rights need to be secured for high school students competing with a single scene at our State Drama Festival?
Our students are able to compete with scenes from musical theatre this year. The scene can only be five minutes long and is adjudicated by a professional (theatre teacher, college professor, or professional working in the field). My students are looking to perform a scene from Rent. Do they need to secure rights and pay royalties to perform a scene for our State Drama Festival?
