Questions & Answers

Willy Wonka Jr. VS Alice in Wonderland Jr.
Hello! I am a Drama Club Advisor of an elementary school in NJ. I am so torn over which show to choose, so if anyone out there is willing to advise me, here is what you may need to know to form an opinion:* My Drama Club is only made up of 5th and 6th graders. Enrollment is generally between 80-90 students. Last year's production had a total of 92 kids.* The program is rapidly growing, and since our first Jr. musical five years ago, the quality has improved, the interest has grown, and we are now very "noticed" by administrators. The pinnacle of what we have accomplished was last year's production of The Little Mermaid, Jr. I want to live up to that pressure.* I always hated when teachers or directors chose a show with a certain person in mind for a certain role, but I can't hide the fact that I have an incoming 6th grader who is PHENOMENAL. When I say she will most likely sing on Broadway one day, I mean it sincerely. She was my Ariel last year, and I would love to feature her, as this will be her last year in my Drama Club.* Finally, my participation from the boys is always unknown. Over the past two years, I was able to do Seuss Jr. and Mermaid Jr. so successfully because of the boys I had for male leads. I may get a good number of boys this year, but I'm not quite sure about the amount of boys who will be able to carry a show or even successfully do a lead role.ANY help, advice, opinions, information you can give me would be so very much appreciated. Thank you in advance! :)

Change the Hermit to Female?
Hello! I'm directing a production of Young Frankenstein this summer and I have a ton of talented girls (a good amount of boys too) but I'm considering changing the Hermit to a girl -- would this be weird? The option would be that she would be a SHE not a HE. This would make Frau Blucher's line at the end be a girl-on-girl line. Which I think could be funny. Thoughts???

Playback/recorded
Anyone who's done this musical before, what did you do with the orchestra for the songs that need to sync up with video ("Lina's Film Would You", "Kathy's "Would You"" and ""Would You" Finale (Film)")? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Ages for Jr shows
Hello, We are a new community theater group just getting off the ground and we are trying to weigh our options. Our initial business plan was to have people ages 16 and up through adults(mainly alumni from our regular school organization) performing in our productions. We have since decided to add a camp of sorts and would possibly do 2 shows, each using each group of performers( kids up to 16 and then those over 16 with no age limit). Using this decision we thought we'd do 2 different JR shows this year, so we can get acclimated to organizing schedules and teaching, etc. and then do a JR show for the camp students and then a full musical for the 16+ group. IS this something we can do for this year? I noticed that Beauty and the Beast Jr states in the contract Youth cast only...what ages is that? Thank you!

Musical recommendation - elementary
Good morning, everyone. After a successful first-time school production of Disney's The Jungle Book KIDS, I am considering directing another musical next year. I want to share my joy of music and the theater to the children. Since I am volunteering my time and our school doesn't have a budget for the program, I want to keep it simple without sacrificing quality. This year, I directed the musical by myself with some teachers designing the set, as well as parents making their child's own costumes. I am leaning towards choosing Annie KIDS but am also thinking about Sleeping Beauty KIDS. My concern with both of these choices is that I am afraid I might scare off some boys because they might perceive them as "too girly." Since, prior to this year, the school has not had a play or musical, I want to build up interest and encourage the broadest base of participation possible. (The license does not appear to be available in Europe for other musicals I considered: Aladdin KIDS, 101 Dalmatians KIDS or Willy Wonka KIDS.) There are also some JR selections that are interesting to me--for example, Alice in Wonderland, Honk!, and the upcoming Peter Pan--but I am concerned that since they are twice as long that they might be too much for me to take on. I appreciate anyone's thoughts or suggestions.
