"MTI is eternally grateful to the schools and educators who instill a love of theater in their students and for the authors who created these wonderful shows being performed by talented young artists across the country," said MTI President and CEO, Drew Cohen. "Having eight of our shows in the top 10 lists is extremely inspiring, and is a reflection on the tremendous appeal of these musicals as well as the dedication of MTI's Education, Marketing and Licensing teams. Musicals like Into the Woods, Shrek, Seussical, Little Shop of Horrors, Annie, Disney's Beauty and the Beast, Disney's The Little Mermaid , and Peter and the Starcatcher all have universal themes relevant not only to the teenage performers themselves, but to their communities as well. All of the authors and rightsholders I've spoken to are very gratified their works of art are helping to make better citizens through musical theatre."
"I'm ecstatic that Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid and Peter and the Starcatcher lead the list of the most-performed musicals and plays in high schools," said Thomas Schumacher, Producer, Disney Theatrical Productions. "That the themes, beloved characters and scores from each of these titles continue to resonate with audiences young and old is a powerful reminder of the value of educational theater to inspire the next generation of theater-goers and theater-makers across the country."
