Character Breakdown
Full of life, passion and spirit, from a young age Ella has run her own race and certainly has the courage of her convictions. With no challenge too daunting - after all, her life’s ambition is to make the world a better place – Ella is a breath of fresh air, in a world that has some rather strange, rather old-fashioned traditions.
Think quirky, unique, idiosyncratic and unconventional. A great singer and actor, our Ella can play comedy in her sleep and her meagre entry onto the stage makes one sit up and take notice.
Vocal Type: Contemporary High Alto with strong Belt
Well-meaning yet a touch naïve, the Prince has relied on his name and status for pretty much most of his life. Long since given up trying to challenge the old-fashioned traditions of the Kingdom, the Prince has settled for a relatively comfortable life - drinking champagne at the opening of a gallery or playing darts with his sycophantic friends. That said, deep down the Prince is aware of right from wrong, if only someone of conviction would stumble into his life, and open his eyes.
Despite his flaws, the Prince does have a certain charm. Think Roger Ramjet rather than a blandly handsome Prince. His foibles are as endearing as they are annoying and he can certainly make you laugh, even if he’s not intending on it.
Our Prince is a great comic actor who can charm you one minute and infuriate you the next.
A great singer the Prince could be everything one would want in a Prince… the only problem is, he isn‘t.
Vocal Type: Contemporary High Tenor with strong Falsetto
Larger than life, our King is confident, brash and the life of the party. He reigns with one simple rule…it’s my way or the highway. That said, there’s more to our King than meets the eye and when push comes to shove, he’s really a bit of a softy underneath.
Vocal Type: High Baritone
Lillicroft is the housekeeper for Ella and her father. She has helped raise Ella after her mother passed away and is deeply maternal and caring. Light-hearted and a ray of sunshine.
Ms Madrina is the magical heart of MIDNIGHT. She is vivacious and funny and a little bit left of centre. She has spent years watching over Ella as her Fairy Godmother but in disguise as Ms Lillicroft. She may not always cast the right spell but does always get the job done!
Vocal Type:Mezzo
Madame is certainly a force to be reckoned with. Smart, with a sense of humour, Madame is not always quite what she seems. She can charm your socks off one minute and make your hair stand on end the next. Madame knows what she wants and woe to anyone who stands in her way.
Vocal Type: Hight Soprano
Andre is the Prince’s right hand man, best friend and confidante, and is one funny guy, even though he doesn’t realise it. He can be quirky, witty and occasionally even quite bright. We’re looking for someone with great comedic skills who is ultra-likeable.
Vocal Type: High Baritone
Role can also be performed by the same actor as Mr Abernathy
Mr Abernathy is brash, sweet, funny, annoying, chirpy and sulky. Yes, he’s a contradiction all right. He’s really whatever Ella needs him to be. He’s Sammy Davis Jnr meets Robin Williams. Mr Abernathy is the voice of a puppet in Act 1 who comes to life in the Act 2 and wows us as an all singing, all dancing bear.
Vocal Type: Baritone
Role can also be performed by the actor playing Andre
The daughter of Madame Belington, Tiffany is fiercely loyal to her family and won’t let anyone get in her way. She’s got a chip on her shoulder the size of a tree trunk and she’s as mean as she is snarly.
Vocal Type: High Alto / Soprano
Tiffany’s younger sister, Rosie is sweet and delightful. She loves her family but doesn’t quite understand their behaviour much of the time. Her family just think she’s young and naïve, however there might just be a bit more going on inside that head than most give credit for.
Vocal Type: High Alto / Soprano
Loyal, good natured and generous, Father loves his family and his daughter Ella is quite simply the apple of his eye. Father will go out of his way to help those close to him. He is well travelled, wise and has a heart of gold.
Vocal Type: High Baritone
Delightful and feisty, 10 year old Stella is full of energy. She is a curious kid who can be a little naughty at times.
Not required to sing
The Princess of Veronia is the daughter of the Emperor from the neighbouring kingdom and has grown up knowing the Prince as almost a brother to her. She is smart and worldly.
Vocal Type: No solo vocals so can be drawn from female Ensemble
The Emperor is manipulative and scheming. He has ambitions to take over the rule of Glenrovia from the King and will stop at nothing to get his way.
Vocal Type: Expressive Baritone
Cloverbelli is the warm hearted Italian neighbour of Ella and her Father, always there to lend a hand. He and Mrs Lillicroft have been with Ella her whole life and in many ways are almost her grandparents.
Vocal Type: Expressive Baritone
